Register new domicile

Persons living in Spain are required to register their domicile in the Municipal Administrative Registry (Padrón) of the municipality in which they usually reside. If you live in more than one municipality, you must register in the municipality where you live for the longest period of the year.

Each Padrón sends its data variation to the Population Database of the National Institute for Statistic (INE), which ensures that a person is only registered in one Spanish municipality by automatic cancellation procedures. The coordination is also carried out with the Register of Spaniards Resident Abroad.

Registration in the Padrón does not expire, except in the case of foreigners. Non-EU foreigners without a permanent residence permit must renew their registration every two years. EU foreigners or foreigners with a permanent residence permit must confirm their registration every five years, or every two years if they do not appear in the Census of Foreigners.

This procedure is free of charge and is carried out by the council of the municipality where your domicile is located. They will ask for documentation proving that you live at that address, along with your identification. You might register other persons' domicile if you prove that you are entitled to do so.
