How the General State Administration is organized

The General Administration of the State has:

  • The Central Organization.
    That is, the Ministries.
  • The Territorial Organization.
    Like the Government Delegations.
  • The General Administration of the State abroad.
    Like the embassies.

Ministries

The General State Administration is organized under the Presidency of the Government and Ministries.

Right now there are 22 ministries.

Secretariats of State and General Secretariats

Subsecretariats and General Technical Secretariat

The Ministries always have a Sub-Secretariat and a General Technical Secretariat for the management of common services.

Directorates-General and Deputy Directorates-General

The Directorates-General are the organ They manage one area or several areas that work the same.

They are organized into General Sub-Directorates.

Territorial Organization of the General State Administration

The General Administration of the State has 2 governing bodies in its territorial organization:

  • The Government Delegates in the Autonomous Communities, who act as Assistant Secretaries.
  • The Subdelegates of the Government in the provinces, who act as deputy general directors.

Government delegations

There is a Government Delegation in each Autonomous Community.

Its functions are:

  • Represent the Government in its Autonomous Community.

They have their headquarters in the city where the Governing Council of the Autonomous Community is located.

Government Subdelegations and Island Directorates

There is a Subdelegate of the Government in each province of the Autonomous Communities with several provinces.

  • its geographical characteristics,
  • their social characteristics
  • Its economic characteristics.

There is an Island Director of the General State Administration in the islands of:

  • Menorca,
  • Ibiza and Formentera,
  • Lancelot,
  • Fuerteventura,
  • La Palma,
  • the Iron
  • and the Gomera.

The Island Directors depend on the Delegate of the Government of their Autonomous Community or the Subdelegate of the Government of their province when this position exists.

General Administration of the State abroad

There are people who represent the General Administration of the state outside of Spain.

They are called ambassadors and permanent representatives to international organizations and are the governing bodies in the General Administration abroad.
