The three basic symbols of the state are: the shield, the flag and the anthem.
The Spanish Flag, instituted by King Charles III by Royal Decree of May 28, 1785, is currently regulated by the Constitution of 1978 which states: “The Spanish flag consists of three horizontal stripes, red, yellow and red, the yellow stripe being of double width than each of the two red stripes.”
Likewise, Law 39/1981, of October 28, states in its first article: “The flag of Spain symbolizes the nation; it is a sign of the sovereignty, independence, unity and integrity of the homeland and represents the superior values expressed in the Constitution.”
On 10 October 1997, the Council of Ministers approved the characteristics and provisions governing the use of the national anthem, and Royal Decree 1560/97 was published the following day in the Official State Gazette. In it, the Granadera March or Royal March is recognized as the origin of the national anthem.
