The European Union guarantees the peace, stability and prosperity of its citizens and states. In a globalized world, it defends our interests. Together we can go much further.
In Brussels, our governments and representatives in the European Parliament take decisions on a wide range of subjects: economy, social affairs, environment, security. These decisions affect the daily lives of 500 million people and 27 countries. The European Union is in everyone's interest.
Spain is a member of the European Union like the other member countries, it has transferred economic and political competences to the European Union. Our Constitution expressly provided for this possibility. It currently highlights the coordination of economic policies in the European semester and the role of the European Central Bank.
The main institutions of the European Union are:
- European Council Chaired by the President of the EU and composed of the Heads of State or Government of the Member States. Set the big guidelines.
- The Commission represents the interests of the EU
- The Council of the European Union represents the interests of the governments of the Member States. It normally brings together Ministers.
- The European Parliament: It represents the interests of European citizens.
- The Court of Justice of the European Union: guarantees the application of Community law by resolving specific disputes and preliminary questions.
- European Central Bank: responsible for exchange rate policy, monetary policy and supervision of the financial system. Act independently.
- Other institutions: Ombudsman, European Court of Auditors, Economic and Social Council. Committee of the Regions, European Data Protection Supervisor.
The Foreign Service of the European Union also stands out.
