Obtaining the Electronic Certificate of the FNMT

How do I get an electronic certificate?

The electronic certificate can also be called a digital certificate.

As we mentioned on our page about the electronic identification, the most widely used electronic certificate is that of the National Currency and Stamp Factory (FNMT).

In this section we are going to focus on this electronic certificate. In particular, we are going to offer you an explanation in clear and simple language on how to obtain it. To do this, we will link to the sections that deal with each point in the FNMT’s electronic headquarters.

What is the Electronic Citizen Certificate?

The electronic certificate of citizen is also called a natural person or a user.

There are other certificates, such as the company or the public sector. As a natural person, the one you are interested in applying for is the citizen’s certificate.

The electronic citizen certificate is a digital document that contains your identifying data.

The certificate allows you to identify yourself on the Internet and also exchange information with other people and bodies, with the guarantee that only you and your interlocutor can access this information.

What is the purpose of the electronic citizen certificate?

As it appears in the FNMT’s electronic headquarters, the citizen’s electronic certificate allows you to carry out procedures safely with the Public Administrations through the Internet, such as:

  • Presentation and Settlement of Taxes
  • Presentation of resources and claims
  • Consultation and registration in the municipal register
  • Consultation of circulation fines
  • Consultation and procedures for applying for grants
  • Electronic signature of official documents and forms

Thanks to this certificate you will be able to avoid unnecessary trips and waits.

Who can obtain an electronic citizen certificate?

Any person, of Spanish or foreign nationality, adult or emancipated minor, who is in possession of their identity document (ID card if it is Spanish nationality; or NIE and passport, if it is foreign nationality).

Does obtaining a citizen’s certificate cost?

No. No. The FNMT citizen certificate is free.

Only, in the event that you obtain the certificate with video identification, you will have to pay a cost of 2.99€ plus tax for this service.

What steps should I take to obtain a citizen’s certificate?

Throughout the process of obtaining the certificate, you will be required to prove your identity. There are 3 ways to prove your identity:

  • Face-to-face, in an office

  • Electronically, with video identification

  • Electronically, using your DNIe

Depending on how you are going to prove your identity, there are 4 ways to get the certificate:

Below, we indicate the steps to follow to obtain the certificate with face-to-face accreditation.

Before applying for the certificate

Before requesting the certificate, you have to decide on which computer (computer) you want to have it installed, since the request must be made from that same computer.

Next, you have to follow 4 steps, which we explain to you next.

The previous configuration is that you have to make sure that your computer has installed the necessary computer programs (software) to be able to request the certificate and install it.

  • Step 1. Previous configuration of your computer equipment

Consult the FNMT’s electronic headquarters for details on how to configure it, as well as instructions on how to do it. avoid possible mistakes during the process of obtaining the certificate.

  • Step 2. Apply for the certificate

Access to this page of the FNMT electronic headquarters and fill in the form, following the instructions indicated.

Once you have completed the form, read and accept the conditions for issuing the certificate and press the “send request” button.

Once this process is complete, you will receive a request code in your email, which you will need for the next step.

If you already had a certificate of citizenship, when applying for the new one, the one you already have would be null and void.

  • Step 3. Accredit your identity

To prove your identity, you must go to an office in person, carrying

  • If your nationality is Spanish, your ID
  • If your nationality is foreign, your NIE and passport
  • In the 2 cases above, the request code you received when performing step 2

Once you have accredited your identity in an office, you can download your certificate immediately to your computer; it is recommended to download it as soon as possible.

  • Step 4. Download the certificate

You must use the same computer and the same user with whom you signed in to the computer, in the event that there is more than one. You must also use the same browser with which you made the request (see compatible browsers).

To download the certificate, access this one page of the FNMT electronic headquarters and completes the data indicated.

Once the data has been completed, read and accept the conditions of use of the certificate and press the “download certificate” button.

How do I renew my Citizen Certificate?

You can carry out the renewal of your certificate during the 60 days prior to the expiry date of the certificate, as long as it has not been previously revoked.
