Emergency number

In Spain, 112 is the general number for contacting the emergency services.

There are other specific numbers, with national coverage, for specific kinds of emergencies (for example, public safety), but using 112 has some advantages:

  • It covers all kinds of emergencies (health, accidents, situations of risk, etc.).
  • It works in the whole of Spain.
  • Calls are free, from both landlines and mobiles.
  • Calls can be made from mobile phones even when they are blocked, when the SIM card is inactive, or there is no coverage from the mobile phone provider.

Access to the service

The number to dial is always the same: 112. There is no need for national area codes, even when calling from a foreign mobile.

Although there is a single number for the whole of Spain, the autonomous communities provide the call services. There are 19 different services, and each service responds to calls within its own autonomous community or city. You can find more information on the administration of autonomous communities in Spain in the links on this page.

Features of the service

Although the call services differ, and may use different protocols and systems for managing incidents, they all have high quality standards for responding to emergency calls and ensuring response times of a few seconds.
