Initiatives for entrepreneurs

An entrepreneur's objective is, based on an initial idea, to take the initiative and decision to undertake a project allowing him or her to enter the market, either by manufacturing a product or by providing a service.

The Directorate General for Industrial and SMEs provides entrepreneurs with free digital tools to facilitate this process, allowing a diagnosis and a set of recommendations to be made that will help prepare entrepreneurs to start up their project and make it viable.

Some of the ones currently available are detailed below:

  • Self-diagnosis of entrepreneurial attitudes

Before starting a business venture, entrepreneurs must be self-aware and reflect on the many aspects related to their business project. An interactive tool has been created for this purpose: after filling out a questionnaire on seven groups of personal characteristics, it provides a diagnosis and recommendations aimed at helping entrepreneurs to prepare for launching their project.

More than 80 entrepreneurs with experience in creating companies participated in the system. Studying these has enabled us to define some standard entrepreneur profiles.

  • Business plan

A free tool that enables you to analyse a business opportunity and explore its technical, economic and financial feasibility. You can systematise it and integrate the activities needed to turn your business idea into a reality.

First you will need to register and create a business project, and then you can try out various economic scenarios to verify aspects such as:

    • how much money you will need to set up your business,
    • how many staff you will need,
    • the selling price of your product or service.

Once the business plan is complete, you can take your idea along to the people or financial institutions that can help you set it up.

  • SWOT – Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats

A tool that enables entrepreneurs to analyse the reality of their company, brand or product so they can make decisions about the future. Internal analysis (strengths and weaknesses) and external analysis (threats and opportunities). The SWOT analysis can be a good starting point when considering a new business project, as it helps to establish the strategies for making a project viable based on a tool that reflects on the situation of an already existing business.

Once the analysis has been carried out, a strategy will need to be defined that can enhance the strengths, overcome the weaknesses, control the threats and benefit from the opportunities.

  • Self-Diagnosis of access to new markets

This tool is focused on helping SMEs to understand their current situation so they can start opening up abroad, know what they are and know what to expect from the foreign market. The creation of the tool was possible thanks to more than a year of work involving the participation of more than 1 300 companies with previous experience in foreign markets.

By studying these companies, some standard profiles of Spanish SMEs operating abroad were defined, and a list of good practices they follow in this area was compiled. You need to register for this service.

  • Self-Diagnosis of the circular economy

Through a series of questions, this tool helps to give you an idea of how your SME is adapting to the circular economy. It also offers recommendations that facilitate the effective implementation of a strategy based on the Circular Economy. The questionnaire comprises nine themes (blocks of questions) focused on the circular economy, which can be answered in the order preferred. Answering each block of questions takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
