Renewal of an EU driving licence

Content

What you need to know

Your European licence is valid in Spain and you can drive and keep it as long as it is in date. Before it expires, you must take steps to renew your European licence at our offices(Abre en nueva ventana) . Remember, your driving licence is not valid to drive in Spain if it is restricted, suspended or withdrawn in the issuing Member State or in Spain. If this is so, you cannot apply for renewal.

If your driving licence has an indefinite period of validity (no expiry date), or is valid more than 15 years for group 1 (AM, A1, A2, A, B and BE), or more than five years for group 2 (C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE), you must renew it two years after establishing your ordinary residence in Spain.

At the start of this procedure, your original licence is withdrawn and we issue you with a provisional Spanish licence equivalent to the one which you held in your country. You will receive your definitive licence in approximately one-and-a-half months. We will post it to you at your home address.

It is always compulsory to renew your European licence in the country of your ordinary residence.

Otherwise, if you held a Spanish licence and your ordinary residence is in another EU Member State, or you are temporarily resident there as a student (for at least six months), you must renew your licence in the Member State in which you are residing.
