Transfer of vehicles for export, step by step

  • Step 1. Signing a contract

If you have decided to buy, you should sign a contract of sale with the seller, which sets out the following:

    • Details of the vehicle,
    • Purchase price and
    • Date and time the contract was signed.

Do not forget that the contract must be signed by both the buyer and the seller on every page of the contract.

You have a period of 30 days from signing the contract to make the transfer.

At our offices, we verify that you have paid the corresponding fee, check all the required documents (do not forget the original vehicle registration certificate), and process the transfer at that time.

  • Step 2. Payment of taxes

You must pay the property transfer tax in the Autonomous Community where you are registered as a resident (using form 620 or form 621, as applicable) for transferring the vehicle. Make sure you keep the receipt.

In almost all Autonomous Communities, you can easily do this online.

  • Step 3. Make the transfer at the DGT

After having signed the contract and paid the transfer taxes, you can process the transfer at the DGT.

You can do this online in the DGT’s electronic register (Abre en nueva ventana) or in person by delivering all the documents to any vehicle registration authority (of the DGT). (Abre en nueva ventana) In this latter case, you will have to request an appointment in advance(Abre en nueva ventana) . This procedure requires the payment of a fee, which will depend on the type of vehicle.

All the information about the procedure is included here(Abre en nueva ventana) , including the documents you need.

Once the transfer is made and the vehicle is in your name, you will be able to continue with the vehicle export process.
