Retirement pensions and retirement as a public servant pensioner

Content

What requirements must I meet?

The requirements vary depending on the type of pension:

  • Compulsory retirement: this occurs on reaching the statutory age, although in some circumstances it is possible to continue working beyond that age. To be eligible for a pension, a minimum of 15 actual years of public service is required.
  • Voluntary retirement: it is possible to retire voluntarily upon reaching 60 years of age, provided that you have 30 years of recognised public service.
  • Retirement due to being unfit for service or incapacity: This occurs when those concerned are affected by an injury or an irreversible process, or one of remote or uncertain reversibility, which makes it totally impossible for them to carry out the functions of their employment. In this case, no minimum period of service is required to qualify for a pension.

What am I entitled to?

In each case, two variables will be used to calculate the retirement pension:

  • Base pay: the variable used is the base pay of the grades (A1, A2, C1, C2, A.P.) corresponding to officials’ positions or pay scales throughout their administrative service.
  • Number of years of service: a scale is used to determine the percentage to be applied depending on the number of years of service. After 35 years of service, the percentage applied is 100%.

The pension is calculated by multiplying the corresponding base pay by the percentage derived from the scale, according to years of service. The total is divided by 14 to obtain the monthly pension payment.

The pension is payable from the first day of the month following retirement.

There are guaranteed minimum pension payments(Abre en nueva ventana) and the pension is adjusted annually.

How do I apply for it?

The procedure for recognition of a retirement pension is initiated automatically. However, the procedure will be initiated at the request of the person concerned in cases where that person is no longer a public servant. In that case you must submit the following form (Abre en nueva ventana) to the Subdirectorate-General for the Management of Public Servants’ Pensions.
